• Question: Why aren't all cats affected by catnip, how do different types of catnip affect the behaviour of cats that are affected by it?

Catnip plants contain an oil that acts as a stimulant for cats – a bit like cannabis in humans. It works by triggering neurons in the cat’s sensory nervous system – the nerves that help us recognise and respond to smells, sounds and feelings.

Apparently only 75% of cats are affected by cat nip and this is due to the genes that they have inherited from their parents. If their parents respond to catnip it is likely that they will too!
