I always liked doing jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, and logical thinking puzzles – so that was why I ended up choosing science subjects at school. Then, because I enjoyed it, I kept doing science at university as well.

For me, having experienced mental health problems as a teenager, I was keen to learn more about mental health problems and how they occur and what we can do to prevent them. This led me to study Psychology at school, and then later at University. It was whilst I was completing my placement year as a research assistant at University that I realised that what I really wanted to do was to research the things that had fascinated me for years.

I became interested in science because of TV.
When I was a teenager I watched House MD (medical doctor tv drama) and several zombie films. A combination of the two made me think,
“Yeah, I want to be that person. I want to be the go to international scientist if there’s ever a global pandemic.”
However, I’ve not found myself in the field of virology or working for the World Health Organisation (yet). But that’s what got me interested in Immunology, and why I went for that degree programme in Glasgow. Because I saw it on TV!

My friends indirectly got me into science. I enjoy talking to them about interesting topics, but I used to also enjoy being right if we got into more controversial discussions! Nowadays, being declared ‘right’ isn’t so important to me, but knowing I have a clear, logical reason for arriving at my opinions has become increasingly important. In many ways, this is what science is.

I sort of feel into. When I left school I thought I wanted to be a lawyer and so first went to university I started doing a law degree, however after 2 years I felt I could be a lawyer for the rest of my life. So I started again, and started a math degree as at school I found maths reasonably easy. It was during my maths degree I found out more about the jobs you could do and at that point I decided I wanted to go into medical research.

My favourite subject at school was biology and decided thats what I would do at university. I then got to learn all about infectious diseases and I knew that was what I wanted to do as a career.

I loved Psychology in As Level, I was interested in how and why people do what they do. It was baffling how easy memories could be manipulated, how people change depending on group dynamics, and learning about all the different diagnoses!

I found DNA really interesting and one of my tutors encouraged me to pursue my interest.
