Mars has a rocky surface which is a bit like Earth’s because it has hills and canyons and craters. It is covered in red dust which is whipped up by the wind to form dust storms (these can sometimes be seen from Earth). Despite having a warm, red look, Mars is very cold and temperatures are on average well below freezing. Temperatures can be as low as -140C and as warm as 30C.

One Mars year is 687 days long and is split into 4 seasons as it has a similar tilt to Earth as it moves around the sun. The atmosphere is thin and is mostly Carbon Dioxide. There is also much less gravity on Mars than on Earth. If you weighed 100 kg on Earth you would only weigh 38 kg on Mars because there is 63% less gravity than on Earth. So if you dropped something, it would take more time to fall than if you dropped it on Earth.
