A microbiologist is someone who works with microscopic organisms – so bacteria, viruses and fungi. People tend to specialise in one sort of organism – I work mostly with bacteria. There are many types of microbiologist – you can be a research scientist like me, or you can be a medical microbiologist who works in a hospital and identifies what bugs are causing your illness so the doctors can prescribe the right medicines. Or you can even be an industrial microbiologist, who works making things like yoghurt and beer which use microbes!
