There are a few types of diseases that are particularly observed in children. Respiratory infections (like the flu) are usually caused by a virus like influenza, and give you symptoms like a runny nose and a cough. Other illnesses caused by viruses are measles and whooping cough, both of which are very serious but can be prevented by vaccines. In some countries where water quality is poor, waterborne diseases, caused by bacteria or protozoa in the water, can make lots of children sick. In sub-Saharan Africa, a major cause of childhood disease is malaria, which is caused by parasites transmitted by mosquitoes.
