• Question: If the universe started from nothing, in a vacuum why is the Big Bang called the “big” “bang” as it must have been tiny and silent.

The ‘Big Bang’ theory states that about 13,600 billion years ago, all the matter in the Universe became concentrated into one spot (called a singularity). This very tiny spot rapidly expanded and continues to expand today. The name makes it sound like there was an explosion but you are right there was no bang! The singularity just got bigger until it became the Universe we know (albeit very little of it) today.

Great answer from Claire – and reminds me of a philosophical quote “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”
