Plants respire just like animals do but this is different to breathing. Aerobic respiration is a chemical reaction that uses oxygen from the air to release energy from glucose in cells. The respiration equation is: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy).

The opposite reaction is photosynthesis. This is the process by which plants make their food (glucose). The photosynthesis equation is: carbon dioxide + water (+ light energy) → glucose + oxygen. The carbon dioxide comes from the air and the water comes from the soil. The light energy comes from the sun. The glucose that is made can then be used during respiration while the oxygen is released for animals to breathe.
