Most energy drinks are very high in refined sugar – which is bad for your metabolism in a several ways. they also have a lot of caffeine – which in low doses is OK but harmful in high doses. Also the fizz in the drink is bicarbonate and that really damages your teeth.

They also contain artificial flavours and colourings which can make you hyperactive. Combined with the caffeine this can make it difficult to concentrate at school and can keep you awake at night. Being tired encourages you to reach for an energy drink and the problem just starts again…

There is a lot of different things in energy drinks between the sugar, artificial bits and caffeine – not the best of combinations when it comes to your teeth or your digestive system

High in refined sugar – bad for you metabolism and increases your risk of things like diabetes. And the diet ones are no better – they are also bad for your metabolism. The caffeine is potentially the biggest problem though. It wrecks your sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. Everything in your body changes pace due to this, depending on what time of day it is. This is why you feel so grotty when you are jetlagged. If you are using energy drinks to avoid sleeping at night then you’re messing up all sorts of bodily processes, and it can increase the risk of things like heart attack and stroke.
