I did want to become a vet when I was younger before I decided I wanted to be a scientist. Now I work at the Vet school at the University of Glasgow so I know lots of people who are vets, scientists or both!

I am not studying to become a vet – I hate seeing animals in pain, and really admire the fantastic work vets do to protect and help our furry friends.

I’m not I’m afraid – though have had several encounters with the vet in the past few months making sure that my puppy chug (chihuaha x pug) gets all the vaccinations she needs to survive in life!

No but I did work at the Royal Veterinary College for a year whilst writing up my PhD. It was a lovely uni with lots of really interesting research going on. I was part of the bone group and the reproduction group and was studying what a particular protein does to help the kidneys work.

It was cool going into a veterinary environment – the whole point of people’s experiments is completely different to that of someone studying human diseases. For example, one girl was looking at biological factors that affect how fast a race horse can go. There were also some rather gruesome things there…like the worm room and the mosquito room!
