Fruit flies are the annoying little flies you’ll see hanging around wherever there is rotten fruit – maybe a bin, or maybe your fruit bowl if you’re not eating your apples! They’ve been used for over 50 years to study genetics and human disease, odd as that sounds!
Drosophila melanogaster is the correct name… my University final year project worked on them… I can still tell you if the one in your bread bag or hanging around your fruit bowl is male or female by the shape of its bum!
