This is a good question but a really difficult concept to explain. There are a lot of definitions depending if you are a psychologist, a neuroscientist or a philosopher. Consciousness means being awake and responsive with the environment. It is a state in which you are aware of yourself and things around you

From a Psychological perspective, cosnciousness refers to the things that go on in our head that we are aware of. Freud, a famous psychoanalyst, spent lots of time researching the subconscious. He claimed that lots of mental health issues were in fact a result of dark things in our subconscious that were trying to get through to consciousness. Most famously, Freud claimed that our dreams were a result of our subconscious thoughts trying to get through to our consciousness.

I agree with the other scientists here. Consciousness is interested, and the existence of it is highly debated. Do other animals experience consciousness? Are people in a coma conscious? It is a really fascinating subject that is really difficult to find a solid answer for 🙂
