An excellent question! I genuinely love public engagement as it (hopefully) shows that science is for everyone, it shouldn’t just be people with degrees who get to understand all the amazing things that scientists do.
I guess this MRC Festival would definitely be counted as public engagement, but other events I’ve attended/assisted with include; Swansea and British Science Festival, these are huge events where scientists and researchers from across the UK talk to families about science, there are fantastic, really fun workshops, talks and things to do! If you ever see any adverts for the British Science Festival (or Swansea Science Festival if you’re in the area) I highly recommend it!
Other engagements include something called FameLab, which is a competition to talk for three minutes about a particular subject using props, but no PowerPoint. Also Scribbler’s Tour (included with the Hay Festival), Pint of Science, and conferences!
I love public engagement… I do school workshops, I visited a prison to do science workshops, I take part in the University festival doing hands on science activities… take part in this and also took part in Soapbox science!
I go to schools to give talks about animals in research.
I’ve talked at career days, in lessons about citizenship and ethics and also in biology classes.
We have also run Open Days where groups of students visit our unit to see how the mice are housed and learn about the role of animal technicians, who are the people that care for our mice.
