The UK has very strict laws that prevent animals from suffering. This means that any procedures carried out are regulated and can only be done by people who are fully trained. All pain must be minimised; for example if a mouse has surgery they are under anaesthetic and will be given pain killers. The studies that I’m involved with usually include an injection or a blood sample being taken which is similar to what an animal might experience at the vets. I am a Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer so ensuring the mice are pain-free and have everything they require to be healthy and happy is part of my job. We also have a vet available 24/7 to advice on medication and treatment if any animals are sick. I hope this explains a little bit more.
