Doing a PhD, and science in general isn’t the most well paid job in the world. I have friends who work in finance. And their take home salary is considerably more than mine. No doubt about that.
But you more than comfortably earn enough to be happy in life.
I can go on holidays regularly, buy the latest gadgets, and save money for the future. BUT, I’m not buying a 16 bedroom luxury mansion any time soon.

Jason’s right, scientists in research don’t get paid a massive amount but it’s enough to have a fun and happy life. What we do get is the opportunity to make cutting edge discoveries, explore ideas that interest us and make a difference to people’s health or lives. Scientists generally pick research because they like it, rather than because they couldn’t resist the salary. I recommend you think about what career will make you happy 🙂 If it’s one that pays well then that’s a bonus!

It’s decently paid but there are definitely other professions that are more likely to get you rich quick.

I wouldn’t get into science if you want a high paying job! We do it for the love of our science not a healthy bank balance. The salary is higher than the national average though.
