I video the embryos of mice that are missing the gene I’m working on. There’s a part of the embryo that normally has rotating hairs on its surface, so I take videos and analyse them to see if the hairs move differently in my mice. I also coat the hairs with fluorescent beads – the hairs normally make the fluid on top of them move, and by using fluorescent beads I can see if this fluid is still moving or not.
