We communicate with satellites in the same way as we communicate on earth with cell phones: using radio waves

All satellites communicate with Earth through radio signals, so there would be a radio transmitter on the satellite, and that sends a signal down to a receiver on the ground. The ground stations have a large aerial and a transmitter and a receiver.
