I am a PhD student, funded by the MRC, at the University of Manchester. My PhD is in the division of Psychology and Mental Health. I am trying to find out what might cause suicide and aggression in prisoners – as we know that suicide and aggression happen more often in prison, than outside of prison. I’m using interviews and questionnaires to try and figure this out.
-
My Typical Day:
My typical day would consist of chatting to prisoners about their feelings

My typical day involves speaking to prisoners about their feelings, and any suicidal or aggressive behaviour they might have been involved in. Typically, I will speak to 2 prisoners a day, for 3 days a week. On the other 2 days a week I will be working on writing research papers, inputting data, analysing data, and being involved with lots of discussion about my research – such as taking part in ‘I’m a Scientist’!

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d like to do something which combines science, mental health and the arts

I’d like to get the public interested in mental health research, using the arts to do this. Specifically, I’d like to put on some sort of play which would share what prisoners have told us in interviews, to try to raise awareness of suicide in prisons, and to inspire people to tackle some of the causes of suicide in prison.
